Every child deserves a summer filled with laughter, opportunity, friendship and hope.

School holidays should be a time of excitement, discovery and new experiences. Yet for many families, particularly those facing financial pressures, isolation or the challenges of settling into a new country, the six-week summer break can become one of the most difficult periods of the year.

At Unity for Integration Project (UFIP), we believe that no child should miss out simply because opportunities are out of reach.

That belief is what inspired Unity Summer Smiles.

Now in its second year, Unity Summer Smiles has become one of our most anticipated community programmes, bringing children and young people together for six weeks of learning, creativity, healthy meals, friendship and unforgettable experiences. More than just a holiday club, it is a place where children feel valued, parents feel supported, volunteers develop new skills, and communities grow stronger together.

Our vision is simple but ambitious: to make Unity Summer Smiles a permanent feature of every summer through sustained funding and long-term partnerships.

Why Unity Summer Smiles Exists

For many children, the summer holidays can widen existing inequalities.

Without structured activities, children can experience:

• Social isolation
• Food insecurity
• Reduced physical activity
• Loss of confidence
• Learning regression
• Limited access to enriching experiences

Parents and carers often face additional pressures balancing work, childcare and rising living costs.

Unity Summer Smiles was created to respond to these challenges by offering a welcoming, inclusive environment where children can learn, play, create and simply enjoy being children.

Our programme is open to families from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds, with a particular focus on supporting refugees, asylum seekers, migrant families and local communities across Glasgow.

More Than a Holiday Club

Every day at Unity Summer Smiles is carefully designed to combine fun with meaningful learning.

Children take part in activities including:

• Team games and outdoor play
• Arts and crafts
• Board games
• Creative media and photography
• Film-making
• Music and performance
• Talent development
• Confidence-building activities
• Leadership opportunities for older young people
• Healthy lunches and snacks
• Reflection and group discussions

Each activity is designed not simply to entertain but to build confidence, communication skills, creativity and friendships.

We want children to leave each day feeling happier, more confident and excited about returning the next morning.

Learning Through Real Experiences

One of the defining features of Unity Summer Smiles is our commitment to experiential learning.

Rather than keeping children inside one building throughout the summer, we create opportunities for them to explore Glasgow and discover places they may never otherwise visit.

This year, one of the highlights was our educational visit to the Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust, where children climbed aboard historic buses, explored classic fire engines, met passionate volunteers and learned about Glasgow’s transport heritage through hands-on experiences.

For many of the children, it was their first opportunity to sit behind the wheel of a vintage bus or step inside vehicles they had only ever seen in photographs.

These experiences spark curiosity, encourage questions and inspire dreams about future careers.

Healthy Food Matters

Good nutrition plays a vital role in children’s wellbeing.

Every day, children attending Unity Summer Smiles receive healthy lunches prepared in our registered kitchen, ensuring they have nutritious meals to support their growth, learning and energy throughout the day.

For some families, this also helps ease financial pressures during the school holidays when free school meals are unavailable.

Sharing meals together also creates opportunities for conversation, friendship and a stronger sense of community.

A Place Where Everyone Belongs

One of the things we are most proud of is the diversity of children and families who attend Unity Summer Smiles.

Children from different cultures, backgrounds and experiences play, learn and laugh together.

New friendships form naturally.

Older children become role models for younger participants.

Parents build relationships with one another.

Volunteers gain valuable experience while giving back to their community.

This sense of belonging is central to everything we do.

At UFIP, inclusion is not simply something we talk about—it is something we intentionally create every day.

Developing Young Leaders

Unity Summer Smiles is not only for younger children.

Older participants are encouraged to take on greater responsibility by helping younger children, supporting activities and developing practical leadership skills.

Many also take part in media training, photography and video production, documenting the programme and learning valuable creative and digital skills that can support future education and employment opportunities.

By investing in young people today, we are helping build confident community leaders for tomorrow.

The Difference We Have Seen

Over the past two summers, we have witnessed remarkable transformations.

Children who arrived shy and withdrawn have become confident participants.

Young people have discovered hidden talents in photography, public speaking and creative storytelling.

Parents have told us their children wake up excited to attend each morning.

Volunteers have grown in confidence and developed new skills through mentoring and practical experience.

Most importantly, children have found a safe space where they know they belong.

These are the outcomes that cannot always be measured by attendance numbers alone but are reflected in smiles, friendships and growing confidence.

This is only our second year, but our ambition reaches much further.

We do not see Unity Summer Smiles as a one-off project or a short-term initiative.

We see it as a programme that children can look forward to every summer-a place where they know they will be welcomed, encouraged and inspired year after year.

To achieve that vision, we need sustained investment.

Long-term funding would allow us to:

• Expand the number of children we can support.
• Offer more educational visits and cultural experiences.
• Increase creative and digital skills training.
• Develop more volunteering and leadership opportunities for young people.
• Enhance wellbeing and physical activity sessions.
• Provide greater continuity for families who rely on our support each summer.
• Plan with confidence and continue improving the quality of the programme year after year.

Sustainable funding would enable us to focus less on securing short-term resources and more on delivering lasting impact for the children and families who depend on us.
