There is something truly special about seeing history come alive, especially through the eyes of a child.

As part of our Unity Summer Smiles 2026 programme, children, young people and families from Unity for Integration Project (UFIP) enjoyed an unforgettable educational visit to the Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust (GVVT). The day was filled with discovery, excitement, laughter and hands-on learning as participants stepped inside a remarkable collection of Glasgow’s transport history.

From the moment we arrived, the warm welcome from the GVVT volunteers made everyone feel at home. Their enthusiasm and wealth of knowledge transformed every exhibit into a fascinating story, helping our young visitors understand how public transport has evolved over the decades and the important role it has played in shaping communities across Glasgow.

A Hands-On Learning Experience

Unlike many museums where visitors simply observe from a distance, the Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust encouraged our children to explore.

The children had the opportunity to:

• Climb aboard beautifully restored vintage buses.
• Sit in the driver’s seat and imagine themselves behind the wheel.
• Discover how old buses were operated before modern technology.
• Learn about the restoration and preservation of historic vehicles.
• Explore classic fire engines and hear the stories behind them.
• Ask questions directly to knowledgeable volunteers who generously shared their expertise.

Watching the children’s faces light up as they took turns “driving” the buses was one of the highlights of the day. For many, it was their first experience inside a historic vehicle, sparking curiosity about engineering, transport, history and careers connected to these industries.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

At UFIP, we believe learning happens everywhere.

Educational trips like this provide children with experiences that simply cannot be replicated in a classroom. They encourage curiosity, build confidence, inspire questions and create lasting memories.

Throughout the visit, our young people demonstrated excellent behaviour, asked thoughtful questions and showed genuine interest in the stories behind the vehicles. Older participants engaged with the volunteers in discussions about restoration, engineering and Glasgow’s transport heritage, while younger children delighted in exploring the buses and imagining themselves as drivers.

The visit also encouraged:

Building Community Through Shared Experiences

One of the most rewarding aspects of Unity Summer Smiles is bringing people together.

The trip gave children, volunteers and parents an opportunity to learn side by side, share conversations and create new friendships. These shared experiences strengthen community bonds and help children develop a greater sense of belonging.

For many families who are new to Glasgow or have recently settled in Scotland, visits like these also provide an opportunity to connect with the city’s rich heritage and feel more connected to the community they now call home.
